Our History

Kevin Nixon commenced his real estate career in 1967 with Stockdale and Leggo - St. Kilda. Then in 1968, he joined an agency as a junior salesman, which at that time was Moorabbin’s leading industrial agency and over the next eight years gained invaluable experience, working his way up to become their top money earner. During this period he had also studied at night school to become a qualified valuer, and gained a full real estate licence, (a four year course in those days). Upon returning to work after the 1975 Christmas holidays and discovering that his situation within the firm had changed to his detriment, he felt convinced that it was time for a change.

Accordingly, on the first of March 1976, Kevin Nixon Real Estate commenced business in a tiny office at No. 2 Station St. Moorabbin, on the corner of Nepean Highway, with one member of staff, a desk and a chair, and an answering machine. Any correspondence that was required had to be “out-sourced”.

Initially Kevin intended his business to remain small and service only his own loyal group of clients but this was not to be!  As Kevin had always taken a personal interest in the client’s properties, many clients followed him and the property management quickly expanded to such an extent that a full-time property manager was needed. Sales and leasing was also increasing so an additional sales person, and then a receptionist/book-keeper were needed and soon it became necessary to find larger premises.

In 1980, a vacant industrial site at 942 Nepean Highway next to the Moorabbin Bowl was offered by the owner on favourable terms and was subsequently purchased. A short Town Planning battle to obtain a permit ensued which was eventually granted and the new office was constructed. The building which today sits on that site was conceived, designed and then built by Kevin who sub-contracted the works, and upon completion, served the needs of Kevin Nixon Real Estate for the next twenty five years.

By 2004, No. 942 had been outgrown and when a former service station site at 769 South Road East Bentleigh, overlooking the Moorabbin industrial area became available, the site was purchased.  A larger modern building was erected to accommodate the continuing expansion of Kevin Nixon Real Estate and remained the home of Kevin Nixon Real Estate until July 2013 when an amalgamation with another local firm resulted in the creation of the new entity of Nixon Industrial. Kevin remained a Director and share-holder and Officer in Effective Control and his son Antony, through his employment with Nixon Industrial, further maintains the Nixon family connection.

As the 40th anniversary of that opening day in 1976 approaches, it is worth noting that the success of the company over that period,  in no small measure is attributable to a very loyal client base.  Some of those original clients and/or their descendants, still remain as clients today.  The personal interest and concern taken in the clients by an extraordinarily reliable and stable staff has meant that clients have remained with us over many years and provided our firm with many valuable personal recommendations and introductions.

In what is possibly unprecedented in terms of real estate employment, seven staff members now mainly retired, have a total combined length of service of 170 years in the employ of Kevin Nixon Real Estate, and for this we thank them!

In the coming years, with the improvements in technology, clients of Nixon Industrial can expect to receive more of the high quality service and advice, just as they have over the last 40.
